Religion and the First Amendment in Schools Recently, students were instructed to write an essay along with a pictorial representation of the person they considered to be their hero. Since one student chose Jesus as his hero and submitted a drawing of the Last Supper, possible legal complications need to be considered before grading and displaying the assignment. An examination of First Amendment legal issues that arise when a student submits an assignment of religious nature will provide insight into how the First Amendment applies in the classroom. Legal Issues Regarding Grading Historically, legal issues regarding the grading of assignments containing religious material have come to similar decisions. In Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969), a group of students decided to express their views about Vietnam by wearing black armbands to school. Although the district attempted to punish them for this, the Supreme Court ruled that the students were expressing a form of â€Å"symbolic speech† and were protected by the First Amendment, as long as it did not disrupt normal school functions. Similarly, expressing views of religion in school is protected if it does not disturb the educational process. According to Haynes and Oliver (2007), students have the right to express religious beliefs â€Å"in homework, artwork, and other written and oral assignments free from discrimination based on the religious content of their submissions† (p. 65). Gattaca, Personal reflection Essay My dream is almost at a success, but there is nothing that can completely explain the struggle I faced through my life. I am Jerome as everyone thinks, but really inside I am Vincent. I have been living a valid life in my invalid self, in this genetically cast society, where your DNA maps your entire life. In this society, your are normal if you are genetically modified, and are guaranteed to succeed in life, whereas if your not, you wont be guaranteed to be accepted by society, and restricted to the manual labor jobs. I was born with a heart condition, and was told that my life expectancy was to only 30 years of age. From that moment on, my parents knew that I would not live up to the genetically superior standards in life and soon afterwards, I realized this too. I was automatically left with no choices in life. It wasnt long after my birth that my parents had another baby, my brother Anton, but he was born of enhanced genes, just like the rest of the society. As years passed by with my brother Anton, I felt the real competition of natural born against genetically enhanced born as my brother Anton was much stronger than me, he was much faster and smarter then me, he was what society called genetically perfect, whereas I was the complete opposite. Even my parents had acknowledged that I am fated as a low class person in this society. I became angered that Anton became taller then me so quickly, my parents also gave him all the attention and respect. No matter how hard I trained or studied, I just could not make it to my dreams, which was to become an astronaut and leave Earth. Because of my genetic status, my applications were always rejected, so I was forced to become a cleaner at Gattaca, my parents told me this would be the closest Id get to my dreams. I wouldnt give up there though, I know I had the intellect and will power to do what I wanted, though my genetic status left me in no position to ever reach my goals. The discrimination I faced proved that there is no equal opportunity for everyone in this world. I thought it might be possible for me to become accepted in this society, especially when my brother Anton and I had a swimming competition where his strength had failed him and I had ended up saving him from drowning. Even though at this point my strength had proved to be better then his, I was still not accepted and still unrecognized by anyone in this society. I soon decided to move out; I felt I had no reason to stay at home as my parents barely noticed I existed. I tore my photo out the family picture as I left home. No longer could I face the pressure of being an outcast, I was tired of being cleaner and was prepared to do anything to be recognized as a genetically superior person. I had met an unfortunate man named Jerome Morrow who became my room mate, but was in a severe accident which left him paralyzed and discarded from society also. Jerome was genetically advanced and through his help, for the first time I had become recognized as a normal person in this world. A shape with a lion body and the head of a man, / A gaze blank And pitiless as the sun,?(2.9-15). Is the world actually coming to an end? Is this sphinx-like creature truly our inevitable savior? Or, is Yeats' life and things surrounding it coming to chaos? Is the war and restless spirit of Ireland influencing Yeats' work? On the other hand, is Yeats trying to help one to understand the frustrations of their own lives on a more personal level? The depth of Yeats's work, among many other great poets, is immeasurable. Many surrounding emotions, and intentions may go into this poem, along with various other subsidies the poet may not even be aware of. This is precisely why the literature department, or lack of, in many schools is weakening. Too many teachers, professors, and now students focus either solely on rhyme and meter or the ?obvious? reason a poet might compose a poem, such as personal relationships, failures, earthly surroundings, or mental distress. The educators of students today need to be more open-minded on the interpretations one has for a particular poem. Literature has been a very strong Darr2 foundation for any prosperous civilization. For centuries poets will be immortalized in classes and books. However, as their words are remembered their spirit has been lost. When analyzing a great poet's work such as Yeats, the most obvious interpretation is usually not the correct one. Literature helps open minds to endless possibilities in every possible aspect. If students are taught to just accept explanations and are discouraged from questioning or even thinking for themselves, then the world will soon become full of conformed, mindless robots. Future leaders of the world must be taught to analyze everything. They must be taught to use their imaginations and logical thinking together. That is a most powerful combination in the hands of a determined student. The process must be in the root of this thinking. It must begin with literature. Throughout Yeats' life he has produced numerous controversial poems. Many people hold their own, very strong, opinions about poems. The truth is , there is not only one. Yeats had many different influences when writing ?The Second Coming?, and it is important for the reader to know each of them before they can even begin to understand the many meanings and interpretations of this poem. Yeats's poetry has three major influences. The more obvious one is the fact that Yeats was from Ireland, and at the time that this poem was written, World War II was affecting Ireland. However, WWII was not something knew to the Ireland's culture because for the past 300 years Ireland had been involved in many other wars and at the same time trying to gain their independence. Another influence on Yeats's writing was his personal religion, Gnosticism. According to Harold Bloom, Yeats believed Christianity to be ?the barbarian theosophy,? and declined to distinguish it form Gnosticism (1). Gnosticism Darr3 has to do with searching for self-knowledge and rejecting the society of their time. This seems to have been quite appropriate for Yeats and his writing. The third influence on Yeats's writing was the work of other philosophical writers such as Shelley, Blake, and Nietzsche. Yeats used some of the imagery and context of their previous works to help describe the meaning of ?The Second Coming.? When reading ?The Second Coming? one's first impression might be of someone who felt as though they had no control of their life and therefore life was about to come to an end. That interpretation was not well thought out and very narrow-minded. The meaning is much more complex than that. ?The Second Coming? is a very powerful piece of poetry, and one of the most universal admired poems of the 20th century. Attempting to understand William Butler Yeats's work is almost impossible unless you let one to become completely open-minded on every aspect of the poem. There are many different theories as to what the true meaning of ?The Second Coming? really is.
